DEAN’S ROLL OF HONOUR AWARD

The Faculty of Science, University of Ibadan, Ibadan is one of the pioneer faculties in the University of Ibadan. The faculty has graduated many brilliant students who are worthy ambassadors of the University and also making Nigeria proud in different spheres of life.

 

To maintain this excellence, the faculty of Science initiated an award in 2002 to recognise at the end of each academic session, brilliant students with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of First Class grade. The award is tagged, “Dean’s Roll of Honour”.

 

At the take-off of the programme in 2002, the plan has been to give the following prizes to the three categories of awardees:

  1. First time winner- A certificate and N2500 voucher for the purchase of academic textbook.
  2. Second time winner- A certificate, a N2500 voucher for the purchase of academic textbook and a plaque.
  3. Third time winner- A certificate, a N2500 voucher for the purchase of academic textbook, a plaque and a cash award of N5000

The above plan has been successfully implemented for 13years. However, since 2014, due to lack of adequate fund and large number of awardees, this Faculty has not been able to hold this programme.

 

Now, the programme is being resuscitated with effect from 2017/18 academic session. Also, in order to further encourage our students and ensure sustainability of the programme we have expanded the scope of the programme and modified our reward package such that the Dean’s roll of honours award will now feature the following:

  1. Academic award.
  2. Leadership award
  3. Community service award.
  4. Sport award.

 

Academic award

 

This is the award which started in 2002 and is meant to encourage brilliant students in 100,200 and 300L with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of First Class grade at the end of academic session. At present, we have close to 100 students who are qualified for this award (based on their CGPA at the end of 2016/17 academic session, as submitted by the various Departments in this Faculty).To take care of this large volume of awardees, during this year event, the prizes to be presented will be some amount of Airtime or Data (instead of the usual N2500 voucher for the purchase of academic textbook, per awardee) and certificate.

 

 

 

However, as from the next year event ( from 2017/2018 Session),

  1. Only the best two students with CGPA of first class grade, at each level per Department will be honoured and awarded.
  2. Only the best three among the three time winners in the entire Faculty will receive cash award.

The mode of entry for this award is by nomination from the Department, based on the CGPA at the end of academic session.

 

Leadership award

 

This is one of the new features of Dean’s roll of honours award. It is an award for Class representatives, Student association executives and Class governors who have demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities. This award is for recognition of leadership potentials and performance in leadership positions at the Faculty of Science, University of Ibadan. The award is open to only undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science, University of Ibadan, who have met the following criteria

  1. Minimum of CGPA of Second Class Upper Division in the session immediately preceding the session the award is to be presented (eg. for 2018/2019 award presentation, the applicant must have minimum of CGPA of Second Class Upper division at the end of 2017/2018 session)
  2. Must have positive significant performance as a leader (e.g. in terms of vision, leading by example, being approachable, dependable and making self sacrifice). This does not include leadership at religious level.
  3. Majority of his/her colleagues must confirm his/her outstanding leadership qualities through the questionnaire to be administered by the Department.
  4. He/She must not be involved in any pending or running Disciplinary Case.


Students applying or being nominated for this award are to note that the decision of the panel of judges is final. Also, only the best three (3) of the applications and/or nominations received, as adjudged by the panel of judges will receive the award (Certificate and N5000 cash prize for each awardee). The mode of entry for this award is either by nomination from the Department or by application. Interested applicant or Department can download application form 

Community service award

This is one of the new features of Dean’s roll of honours award. It is an award for undergraduate students who have impacted or are impacting positively on their communities/societies. This award is meant to encourage students who apart from their high academic performance have impacted positively on the society. Such impacts could have several dimensions (could be free teaching, execution of personal/group projects, etc). The bottom line is that these students must have performed duties or are currently performing duties that will improve the lives of those around them. The award is not for services that have been paid for or that may be paid for. It should be service(s) rendered or being rendered purely on humanitarian ground and for the upliftment of the University community. The award is open to all levels of undergraduate students (100-400), in the Faculty of Science, University of Ibadan, who have met the following criteria:

  1. Minimum of CGPA of Second Class Upper Division in the session immediately preceding the session the award is to be presented (eg. for 2018/2019 award presentation, the applicant must have minimum of CGPA of Second Class Upper division at the end of 2017/2018 session)
  2. Must have impacted positively in the Society. This does not include service that has not started. The service rendered must not be connected with religion
  3. The project(s)/service(s) rendered or being rendered must be verifiable.
  4. He/She must not be involved in any pending or running Disciplinary Case.

Sport award

This is the third feature of the Dean’s roll of honours award. This is to reward the best football team in the Faculty at the end of Interdepartmental Dean’s cup event. Each of the players of the team that wins the Dean’s cup will receive a Certificate of honour and a warm handshake of the Dean.
