Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics, University of Ibadan. The Department is one of the foundation departments established in 1948 as a department of the then University College, Ibadan, an affiliate of the University of London. The university college became a full- fledged university in 1962.

The Department has been designated a Centre of Excellence by the Third World Academy of Sciences. We enjoy extensive collaboration with several centres of excellence around the world. The Department currently runs an endowed chair named as Pastor E. A. Adeboye Professorial Chair in Mathematics and another centre devoted to academic research named as Adegoke Olubummo International Mathematical Centre has recently been established by the University.

The Department offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs. Our first degree covers both pure and applied mathematics. Our curriculum at the undergraduate level is designed so that students can discover and excel in any area of pure or applied mathematics. Doctoral research works are available in all areas such as algebra, topology, geometry, functional analysis, complex analysis, numerical analysis and stochastic analysis. Others are: probability theory, financial mathematics, ordinary, partial and stochastic differential equations, operations research, and mathematical physics. The program emphasizes original and independent scholarship, while master's degree program prepares candidates for further academic studies, public life and professional practice. These programs share a number of distinctive and desirable features: a high level of engagement between distinguished scholars and outstanding students, an environment that encourages friendship and support allowing concentration on scholarship. Our programs over the years have demonstrated success in educating students for careers in academia, government, and the non-profit and corporate sectors.

Current and prospective students, faculty, staff and alumni will find here news of activities. If you don’t find the information you need, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Dr Michael EniOluwafe

Head of the Department
