IX. Research:

Completed:

Environmental Modeling and Chemometrics:

Industrial Pollution Assessment in Lagos, Nigeria by Industrial Pollution Projection System (IPPS, Effluent Analysis, and Data Mining: This study estimated the sectoral pollution loads in Lagos using Industrial Pollution Projection System (IPPS), a model developed by the World Bank as a rapid assessment tools to estimate industrial pollution. In most cases, the higher the total output and employment, the higher the sectoral pollution loads. (Nos. 1, 7-10)

Water Quality of River Ogun Using Multivariate Statistical Techniques: Variations in water quality of River Ogun around the cattle market, Isheri along Lagos-Ibadan Express Road were evaluated using multivariate statistical techniques. The results showed that the index which changes the quality of the water differs. (No. 11)

Environmental Monitoring and Assessment:

Assessment of Water Quality Parameters of River Ogun around the Cattle Market, Isheri, along Lagos – Ibadan Express Road:  The study investigated the quality of River Ogun water around the cattle market, Isheri along Lagos-Ibadan Express Road. The concentrations of heavy metals were generally higher than the average world river water. (No. 6)

Physicochemical Characterization of Effluent from Crude Oil Processing Plants: The study assessed the physicochemical characteristics of effluent samples collected from crude oil processing plants. The results showed that most of the parameters were above the maximum permissible limits. (No 5)

Determination of Nonylphenol, Octylphenol and Bisphenol-A in Water and Sediment of Two Major Rivers in Lagos, Nigeria: The study investigated the presence of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in sediment and water samples collected from two major rivers in the South-west Nigeria. The study confirmed the presence of endocrine disrupting compounds in surface water in Nigeria. (No. 12)

Chemicals and Waste in the Environment: Global chemical pollution is a serious threat to sustainable development and livelihoods. The problem has impacts on both humanity and ecosystems, and includes adverse effects from long-term exposure to low or sub-lethal concentrations of single chemicals or to mixtures of chemicals. (No. 2)

Distribution and Bioavailability of Metals in Gasoline Contaminated Sites in Lagos, Nigeria: Total Concentrations of twenty-five elements were investigated in composite samples collected at different depths within the sites. The results showed that there was a great variation in the concentrations of the elements in both sites with depth. (No. 13)

Site Investigation Case Study: Nigeria. Old Power Generating Station, Ijora, Lagos, Nigeria. Detailed Site Investigation: The objective of the Detailed Site Investigation (DSI) was to characterize and delineate potential contaminant of concern in the Old Power Generation Station, Ijora, Lagos. The results showed that all the water samples and some of the soil samples collected at different depth were contaminated with PCBs. (No.15)

Inventory of the Nine New Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in South-East, South-South, and South-West, Nigeria: Global efforts have been directed towards minimizing and eventually phasing out of POPs as a result of the associated adverse toxicological and environmental implications. The inventory of the nine new POPs was carried out in the Southern part of Nigeria. The results indicated that Government banned the use and sales of these POPs but a dealer in Edo State displayed some of the chemicals. (No 16)

Assessment of Soil Contamination of a Cattle Market Around River Ogun Basin, Isheri, Nigeria: The distribution of heavy metals, organochlorine pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated in the topsoil and the subsoil of the cattle market around River Ogun basin in the South-west Nigeria. The results showed that some potent carcinogens were present at varied concentrations.

Profiling Heavy Metal Distribution and Contamination in Soils of Old Power Generation Station in Lagos, Nigeria: The study investigated the extent of heavy metal contamination of soil of the old power generation station in Ijora, Lagos. There was a great variation in the concentrations of the metals in both surface and subsurface soil.

Waste Management:

Medical Waste Management Practices in Nigeria; the Case of Lagos and Ibadan: The current management practices of medical waste in Nigeria were studied using Lagos and Ibadan as case study. The study revealed that there was no proper segregation of medical waste and the waste handler had no form of training in medical waste management and as such, are greatly exposed to different health risk. (No. 3)

Treatment of Brewery Wastewater Using Clay Fortified with Stone Pebbles: The study investigated a low-cost treatment of brewery wastewater, achieved by mixing clay with stone-pebbles to improve the low permeability of water through the clay beds. The results showed that the effluent which passed through the continuous treatment mode had better quality characteristics. (No. 5)

Assessment of Dumpsite Solid Waste, Leachate and Topsoil: In this study, solid waste, dumpsite leachate and top soil were investigated. Quality parameters, heavy metals, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in the leachate and topsoil samples while the solid wastes were characterised to determine the different composition of the wastes. Varying concentrations of PCBs and PAHs were detected in both the leachate and the topsoil. (No. 14)

In Progress:

Determination of Nonylphenol, Octylphenol, and Bisphenol-A in Water, Sediment and Fish of Lagos Lagoon, Nigeria: The study assessed the concentrations of the targeted compounds in water, sediment and fish of Lagos Lagoon. The targeted compounds were detected at varied concentrations in the samples. Data under processing. Data analysis ongoing.

Heavy Metals and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Electronic Waste (e-waste) Dumpsites in Lagos and Ibadan: The study investigated the distribution of heavy metals and PAHs in soils collected in e-waste dumpsites in Lagos and Ibadan. The results confirmed that all the soil samples analyzed were contaminated with heavy metals and PAHs. Data analysis ongoing

Assessment of Lead and Cadmium in Soil of Residential Areas: The study investigated the levels of Pb and Cd in soils collected around painted residential buildings in Lagos and Ibadan. The study showed that painting is one of the potential sources of lead in soil. Data analysis ongoing.

Health Impacts of Waste Management Practices in Nigeria: the Case of Lagos and Ibadan Waste Managers: The study evaluated the general health status of waste managers as well as the solid waste management practices in Lagos and Ibadan. The results showed that personal protective equipment was not used by many of the managers. Data under processing.
