Founded in 1948, the Department of Geography at the University of Ibadan stands as one of the oldest and most distinguished centres of geographical scholarship in Africa. Situated within Nigeria’s premier university, the Department has built a proud legacy of excellence in teaching, research and applied scholarship that continues to shape geographical thought and practice nationally and internationally.
Our work is anchored in understanding the dynamic relationships between people, place, environment, and society. With strengths across Physical Geography, Human Geography, GIS and Remote Sensing, Climate Change Studies, Hydrology, Geomorphology and Sustainable Development, we pursue interdisciplinary research that responds to some of the most urgent challenges of our time, including climate variability, environmental degradation, rapid urbanization, water resource management, and community resilience. We offer robust undergraduate and postgraduate programmes designed to develop critical thinking, technical competence, and advanced analytical skills. Our graduates are well-positioned for impactful careers in academia, environmental management, public service, geospatial technology, consulting, development practice and related sectors across the globe.
We warmly welcome students, alumni, researchers, policymakers, development professionals and industry partners to engage with us as we continue advancing geography-driven solutions for sustainable and resilient futures.
